THE METABOLISM OF SULFUR. XI. CAN TAURINE REPLACE CYSTINE IN THE DIET OF THE YOUNG WHlTE RAT? * BY GEORGE

چکیده
Of the organic sulfur compounds of biological interest, taurine is unique as the only sulfonic acid derivative known to have its origin in the activity of living cells. Its origin from the cystine of the protein molecule is generally accepted, but proof of the reaction by which it is derived is lacking. Friedmann (1) oxidized cystine to cysteinic acid by bromine water, and was successful in obtaining taurine from the latter by decarboxylation at high te1nperatures.l

Further Studies of the Metabolism of Taurine-s35 by the Rat*
In a recent study (1) of the metabolism of taurine-S35 and taurocholate-S35 in the rat, a significant tissue retention of labeled sulfur. was observed 24 hours after the administration of taurine-S36. This tissue retention was increased and the urinary excretion decreased by preparatory feeding of a diet low in organic sulfur. Machlin et al. (2) have observed that 65 per cent of injected sulfat...
متن کاملThe Metabolism of Sulfur Xxv. Dietary Methionine as a Factor Related to the Growth and Composition of the Hair of the Young White Rat by E. Virginia Heard and Howard
The relation of the cystine of the diet to the growth and composition of the hair of young white rats has been established (l-3). In the absence of adequate amounts of dietary cystine, optimal growth of the hair was not observed and the cystine and sulfur contents of the hair were lower than those of rats maintained on diets supplying ample amounts of cystine. The ingestion of cystine in quanti...

1. Cysteic acid fed to albino rats as 12.5 to 15 per cent of the McCollum stock diet caused portal necrosis and cirrhosis of the liver within 2 weeks. Concentrations of cysteic acid of 6.25 per cent or less in the diet produced no liver lesions within 2 weeks. 2.dl-Methionine fed as 6.4 to 12.4 per cent of the McCollum stock diet or of a low protein, low fat diet, resulted in severe atrophy of ...
